Stalkers Profile Chosen Victims

We seem to have our technical difficulties solved (tentatively) and are back on track again. Thanks to the Blogger Support Team!
Best Defense Against Assault
This headline caught my eye immediately! I started to “blow it off” as it’s pretty much a cookie-cutter “guideline” page colleges publish for students like this baloney: “Across campus, a student makes a short-cut through the edge of the woods to reach the car parked nearby. On a busy schedule, the student follows the shortest path to and from class.” (they are alluding to patterning or stalking a victim)
I almost clicked away for real when I read next: “Elijah Anderson in The Atlantic Monthly, May 1994, describes the code of the streets as a “proscribed set of rules that allow those (mainly urban street-oriented people) who are inclined to aggression to precipitate violent encounters in approved ways.” (uhmm, what did he say again please?)
He classifies attackers as four “types”, and a larger “sub-set” of “types” who exhibit various other “type” behaviors simultaneously. (this guy’s good!)
Ok, the four types are:
1. Stalkers
2. Intoxicated types
3. Hostile types
4. “Juiced” types (”These people seek “juice”–gaining respect–on the street by “jacking up” people. These people can be extremely dangerous if they have a limited view on life. Do not challenge this type especially if you think they might be armed”) You really gotta start loving this guy now but read his sub-sets of “type” mixtures for a good hoot, although he actually is fairly insightful in some of his observations.
Noted is the final section: An Ounce of Prevention
This deals with admonitions about the carrying for use, of weapons, by students and discouraging it unless you are skilled in self defense techniques and hand to hand combat. They stress things like the “buddy system” for walking, looking assertive, and other passive means of self preservation. They note that the weapon might be turned on you. Further stating: “If you are not skilled in self-defense techniques and do not know exactly how committed you are to the consequences of using a weapon, then you probably should NOT carry a weapon.”
I take exception to part of this statement. If you are skilled and a real self defense expert, you aren’t very afraid anyway. You have been trained to avoid being set up. You know just when to launch a vicious attack as your assailant begins his. It is not for these rare people that products like Mace pepper spray and kubotans are made for. These self defense products take almost no training to employ effectively against an attacker. “Shoot defense sprays for the eyes and never into the wind…then run and scream if there are people around or fight for your life if trapped” (first and only training of pepper spray – black belt level).
What about mentioning personal security alarms which come in a variety of types (all very loud), like electronic whistles, alarm and strobe or flashing light when the pin is pulled. These combine light and sound to discourage a potential attack and are certainly a “must have” self defense item for any woman’s purse or pocket. You can click on the title above and read this whole piece in it’s entirety w/o my remarks and you’ll see it’s fairly good. I felt the end was inaccurate and incomplete. Talk to you soon!
