Continuing on the theme of securing your home from burglars, I’d like to suggest another inexpensive yet effective alarm.  Called the Slide Away Alarm for windows, doors and sliding doors. This little beauty will not only frighten off burglars and draw attention to a break-in attempt, it will also alert you if you’re inside the home as well.

It protects by using magnetic affinity.  What this means is that a small actuator strip is mounted on the edge of the door, window or sliding door and the alarm unit is mounted on the frame, directly opposite from the strip.  They have a magnetic affinity to each other and when broken, the alarm unit on the door or window frame will sound an extremely loud 105 decibel alarm.  It  will not shut off unless you disarm it, making it very effective.

It is powered by three button cell lithium batteries (which are included) and has an arm / disarm switch which makes it very cost effective in both purchase and usage prices. The alarm is about 1.5 inches wide and 2.5 inches high.  The actuator strip is .5 inches wide and just over 2 inches high.  They come in black or white and can be mounted at any height that you choose, such as near the floor, standing level or near the top of the window or door.  They over-deliver for the small price tag!

As an addition to my previous post, I thought I’d add one of the cheapest and effective methods of thwarting burglars from making off with your most precious valuables.

A burglar wants to toss the dwelling and grab everything in plain sight and get out as quickly as possible.  You may not have the money for a sophisticated and securely installed safe, but anyone can afford a diversion safe.  These are safes that look and are weighted like common household goods.  Shaving cream, fruit cocktail, carpet cleaner and so on.

What an amazing way to thwart a burglar – hiding your cash, jewelry and other valuables amongst your common household canned goods!

You may have teens in the home and don’t want to leave your narcotic medication out where they or their friends might be tempted to swipe some.  We don’t want that.  Put them in your handy diversion safe. 

The key to using these safes is secrecy.  If no one but you or perhaps your spouse knows about the diversion safe, the more effective it will be.  Try one out – you won’t be disappointed!

A bit of research led me to the information that “house breaking” or burglary, is the number one crime on the world scene.  Burglary is a crime that can become very dangerous if an intruder is violent and one happens to be at home.  This can lead to assault or worse scenarios. When one returns home and finds his dwelling has been burglarized, it leads to a feeling of being violated and anxiety remains in the aftermath, since we all want to feel safe in our homes.

If any protected window is vibrated roughly or broken, the alarm sounds and will frighten any burglar away, since the last thing they want is to draw attention. This little gem will awake anyone in the house immediately as well, allowing one to call 911 or arm themselves.

Another is the Auto Dialer Intruder Security Alarm. This unit uses passive infrared monitoring to protect an area, an entrance or hallway for instance.  It is pre-programmed by the owner to dial 5 preset telephone numbers if any movement is detected.  It will simultaneously trigger a 105 decibel security alarm while it is dialing. So, you may pre-set it to call your cell phone, your work phone, your neighbor’s phone, a relative or the local police emergency phone.  It will call these numbers in order, until it is answered.

It is powered by an AC adapter which fits common wall sockets and uses a 9 volt battery as a backup power source.  It is wall mountable with an adjustable mounting bracket. It alerts you that motion has been detected in your protected area. This alert can be set to a chime mode in case you are around and simply want to be alerted that someone has entered the home or business.

Check out these two superb items for an inexpensive solution to thwart home or business intruders.  An ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure!

I was watching another of the many animal attack video clips on TV last night.  I saw an interesting clip of a lion tamer who, as expected, got bitten badly by a lion he was working with.  This huge, hairy brute was NOT going to let go despite the shouts of his trainer and his party of cohorts. Things looked very grim for the lion tamer as he was taking an awful thrashing by his student.

Not knowing what to do next, one of the background helpers whipped out a can of aerosol pepper spray and cut loose with two short bursts.  The lion immediately released his would be meal and made the funniest grimace with his mouth wide open and was immediately compliant to the trainer, who grabbed his lead and led him roaring and wagging his head about, all the way back to his pen.

Now that is a powerful, visual demonstration of what I try to recommend: that hikers always carry pepper spray and be prepared to use it, when out camping or hiking in country that is also shared with mountain lions or bears of all species. It can absolutely be the difference between a horrendous death or a bad bite.  Perhaps in the case of bears, who seem to allow more time than big cats to strike, it may save one from any attack whatsoever.

Animals have more sensory receptors and they are far more sensitive to a deterrent such as a pepper spray. Outdoors men/women in these regions are passing up a golden opportunity to avoid death or severe injury if they don’t equip themselves with pepper spray.  You should always have some close at hand!

Later, on another Police TV show, there was a calm and seemingly docile prisoner, cuffed and in custody, who just freaked out completely. He rammed one officer, head over heels and was battling two other beefed up officers and handcuffs notwithstanding, was dishing out as good as he was getting. Finally, one officer pulled out a canister of Mace Pepper Gel and let him have it right in the eyes, face and mouth. This stopped all aggression immediately.
