College Self Defense Essentials

May 31
2009

I have seen a lot of websites selling various self defense kits that are priced too high, even though they do have some great products available for your young college student’s protection.

I recommend a trip to SafetyEnforcement.com for the same products and at better prices. They’ll also send you a free canister of pepper spray in a rugged polymer keychain holster for orders that meet or exceed $25.  Not bad – a free $9.95 MSRP pepper spray just for entering the color you want when you check out!

Down to basics:  1.) I would recommend that your college student have a few essential products on hand to help insure their safety while away at school. If living in an apartment, condo or room – how about making sure that no one can get through that door while they’re asleep? Lets give them a Mace Big Jammer door brace.  One of these, slipped under the handle of the doorknob and braced against the floor, will require the door to be completely crushed off of the hinged side – cops use 12 ga shotguns with 0000 buckshot to achieve this, as no amount of bashing or kicking will open a door protected in this manner.

2.) A very loud personal alarm is another good measure to draw attention to an intruder or attacker and thwart attempts at break-ins and muggings.  Bad guys like to stay out of sight and out of people’s view.  Check one out they’re dirt cheap!

3.) The very best, Mace pepper gel is the ticket for stopping an attacker, violent guest or a rapist.  This stuff blasts a solid stream of red hot gel and it’s pin-point accurate to 18 feet. It only burns and affects the person that is hit with it.  The more they try to rub it off, the more they rub it in!  The cool thing about this gel is that there’s no cross-contamination.  So, if an intruder jumps in the car next to your son or daughter and takes a shot of this gel in the face, they’ll be instantly blinded and burning badly – BUT – there will be no ambient particles left floating in the air!  Great for apartments, rooms and any type of weather condition too!

For the keychain pepper spray, you’re covered – remember that free one you get at check-out right?

4.) Last but not least, is not some cheesy stun gun, but the top of the line, Stun Master Hot Shot 975K volt stun gun.  These are serious medicine and I have personally used them on my son (my rough and tumble 25 yr old) and on myself. On an arm they hurt and the limb jerks back instantly – perfect for someone reaching into a car window or into an opening in the front door. That arm’s going to disappear, trust me. For a full fledged assault, just a short blast into the body cavity will make all of the stomach and chest muscles bunch up immediately. If applied for more than a second, they’re going down!

Don’t fall prey to a ton of junk, buy the essentials and buy the best.  That’s the way I feel when I buy a hand gun or a safety item for my wife or daughter.  I don’t buy “junk” – I buy the best, at a good price and have the satisfaction of knowing they’ve got a way better than average chance, of staying completely safe and secure.

Stun Batons For Self Defense

May 18
2009

stun baton

By combining extended reach with extra long contact strips, the stun baton is more effective and extremely safe for the user.

When you pull the trigger, sparks instantly arc between the two electrodes of the baton, and this emits a very loud and intimidating crackling sound.

If you ever have to use a baton in a confrontation, an attacker will definitely think twice when they see and hear that 300,000 to 500,000 volts of raw power in your hand.

Stun batons come with two metal contact strips that extend upwards, six inches from the tip of the baton. These strips become electrified when the baton is discharged, and they’ll prevent an attacker from grabbing it out of your hand.

Most stun batons also come with a wrist strap, to insure that you don’t lose your grip on your baton. This is an extremely useful feature and gives the owner added confidence when using the stun baton.

The stun baton is powered by two, 9 volt standard alkaline batteries, which last for approximately 1.5 years

The stun baton uses a high voltage, low amperage discharge to override the body’s nervous system. An attacker feels immediate pain and may even become immobilized when hit with a burst from a stun baton, depending on where and for how long they were stunned.

The best target areas for stun baton applications are just below the right and left shoulders.  Also, right below the rib cage on the right or left side. These target areas seem to result in a more effective result.

The best part about a stun baton as I’ve discussed in the past, is that it keeps it’s user out of the grappling range and that is a huge advantage to have over any opponent.

They are also great for protection against dangerous dogs and will allow you to shock them, if they attack, from a distance, with pinpoint accuracy, while remaining at a safer distance.  Not nearly as close as a regular stun gun, to the dog’s business end – those sharp teeth!

Women and Self Defense Issues

May 16
2009

How useful is a stun gun for women in a self defense scenario:

Well, stun guns are handy self defense weapons commonly used by women. They are hand held electronic devices used for deterring attackers by means of a high voltage burst of electricity.

Is it safe to use stun guns:

If you are using a standard model commercial stun gun, then you can only immobilize an assailant for up to several minutes and you won’t cause any permanent damage to an attacker.

Alternatives other than stun guns:

There are a wide variety of pepper sprays that can be substituted for stun guns. People believe that the disadvantage of using pepper spray is that the windy conditions can adversely impact it’s use as a solid self defense deterrent. My opinion is that at point blank range, it’s better than nothing and even more effective than a stun gun because it can be used without physical contact with an attacker.

In addition, there are a wide variety of delivery systems, so if the wind issue bothers you, simply pick up a model that has “stream delivery” or a gel and you’ll not have a worry about possibly getting any on yourself.

Is it legal for a woman to “conceal carry” Pepper Spray or Mace:

In most cases the answer is yes!  Some States or Cities like New York require that you purchase pepper spray from a licensed firearms dealer or a licensed Pharmacist, but in almost all of the 50 States, that is an exception. 99% of jurisdictions allow the carrying and use of pepper spray or Mace.

Pepper spray is non-lethal and the effects are dramatic but only temporary.  This allows you to escape and avoid an attacker, thief or rapist, temporarily.

So, in other words, a woman can own pepper spray and use it if she is getting mugged, as long as long as she buys it from a “licensed dealer” in NY state (check laws where you reside).

So, to condense this even further, I advocate that women have a stun gun or preferably a canister of pepper spray or Mace to ward of attackers and possibly save themselves from all sorts of attacks. They are so affordable that a lady can easily afford to own both deterrents.  If the weather conditions worry you, then be sure to choose a stream or gel delivery system.

Dana White – A Controversial Man!

May 10
2009

Dana White has made put MMA on the map and brought MMA into mainstream fighting sports and he’s obviously a great businessman. I do have a beef about him though – he appears to be a very fickle boss to work for. Yesterday’s heroes are today’s dog-meat and Dana White will be right up front and say so in interviews.

I may be out of order (chronologically) but first he was mean spirited in his remarks that “Tito Ortiz isn’t a fighter” and that he was unfocused and basically finished in the UFC. C’mon Dana, Tito Ortiz is a warrior and one of the most focused and conditioned fighters that steps into the Octagon. So, he wants to pursue some acting, or wants a raise and you respond that you’re “not in the Tito Ortiz business?”  Shame on you for treating your assets and your fighter’s fan bases so rudely! Just type in “Dana White Tito Ortiz” in the search box at Google or YouTube and listen to the disrespect yourself.

Dana White needs a bigger hat size IMHO, because his head is getting so big, calling Tito “the rocket scientist” and “the genius” sarcastically because Tito isn’t his “boy” aymore and wants t call some of his own shots in life.

Then he was “amping” on Randy Couture about not defending his title and dodging contenders to wait for an easier opponent. That seemed to straighten itself out as Randy retired from the UFC, obviously disgruntled but non-specific as to what exactly went down but now he’s returned and won the heavyweight belt back again only to lose to newcomer Brock Lesnar.

My latest peeve is that Mr. White, has formed some sort of little vendetta deal, sponsoring the U.K vs.USA which is admittedly good for business. What better than to cash in on the rivalry that’s older than the hills – the USA throwing off the yoke of British rule.  We are allies of course, but there’s always a little extra something when it’s the UK vs. the USA in any competition.  Dana White, finding a good young fighter with a gift for gab in Michael Bisping, has started his latest season with Bisping as a coach of the UK Team.

I find this annoying since Bisping is a decent fighter that Dana White won’t promote in a fight against anyone of top notch caliber.  I mean he’s had tons of fights put all seem to be hand picked for Bisping to win.  How long do you groom a guy or maybe protect him, I should say?  Long enough to keep the ratings up I guess.  Bisping has many more fights than others who have been in title fights already, but his grooming (protection) has gone on long enough. It’s embarrassing!  Put him in with Forrest Griffin, Anderson Silva or Kendall Grove and let’s see him fight somebody to warrant his appearance as Team Coach on the weekly “Ultimate Fighter” program.

C’mon Dana I’ve been a fan since Rorion Gracie promoted the 1st UFC card and although you’ve done a good job, lately you seem to be getting a little flaky and transparent in this fan’s eyes.  Straighten up and fly right dude and I’ll put my hands together for you again, like I used to!

M-Tech – Tactical Knives – Sports Knives

MTech-1221

MTech USA manufactures high quality folding knives at a fraction of the cost that some of the “big name brand” companies sell their knives for. You can pick up a superb, razor sharp MTech tactical folding knife for around a $12 – $15 range!  I have one sitting next to me right now and the bayonet style blade is exactly 4″ inches long.  It has beautifully polished hardwood grips.  It comes with a linerlock system that would make a $79 Cold Steel Ti Lite look small by comparison. It comes with a right handed thumb stud for one of a couple of methods of opening and it’s threaded, so you could convert it to left hand, if needed. It also has the same hilt as the Ti Lite which is notched, for opening the blade by using the “pocket drag” method. This method snags the hilt along the corner of your pant’s pocket for a lightning fast opening, from an inside the pocket, belt clipped carry. The MTech however, has nicely rounded edges on their hilts and won’t dig into your thumb when grasping the knife firmly in your hand.  It took me about 1/2 hour with a dremmel and finishing stone to round off the hilt on my Ti Lite to achieve the same amount of comfort.

MTech has some very nice folding sports knives as well for EDC (every day all-purpose) carry. Not one of them runs more than $15 and most are only around $12. They span a large range of “looks” and the blades vary in lengths depending on the model. There’s one that’s legal for pocket carry, no matter where you currently reside. They all have thumb-stud opening and are equipped with pocket clips for a super-easy carrying solution.

It’s funny about knives, sometimes you get what you pay for, sometimes you just pay for a brand name, but with MTech USA brand knives you always get a lot more than what you paid for. I highly recommend MTech folding knives for a look. I’ve purchased three in the past 6 months for comparison to other more high priced brand names. I have been pleasantly surprised by the MTech knives on all three occasions. They didn’t make a “ding” in my wallet which is always a nice experience!

keychain pepper spray

As you’ve read my posts, many times I’ve relayed my opinion that pepper spray is the best self defense product you can have in your arsenal to stop attackers or slow them down long enough to make a retreat or a counter-attack.

It blinds the assailant and chokes them up instantly.  It works against aggressive animals as well! MSRP is $9.95 for this handy item and you can have it free with your order of $25 of any other products sold on the website.

Eskrima – Practical Self Defense!

May 04
2009

Out of the few disciplines of martial arts I’ve studied over the years, my favorite for it’s simplicity and ease in learning, is stick and blade fighting – called Eskrima.  It is a very deadly knife fighting art.

We train with sticks and live blades (dull if you have a training partner). I think many of the guys that carry a fancy tactical folding knife think they’re bad-asses because they have this knife or that knife. Boy, they don’t even have a clue what a knife fight is all about.

I pick a gun first, a 22″ to 24″ stick second and a knife third for deadly weapons.  A stick defeats a blade, a gun defeats a stick or a knife.

Angel Cabales was once quoted as saying “give my opponent an 18 foot spear, give me an 18″ piece of rattan and I will defeat him every time.”  He fought in many death matches in his long life, before his passing.  I have been able to train under a 3rd generation student of his for quite awhile and under the student of another FMA Master as well.

I don’t think you can find another martial art that is more natural and simple to learn the basics of the system. It’s easy to swing a stick or blade and once the footwork and drills are learned, as well as the many nuances of this system of fighting, you can consider yourself “well armed” with only a short stick or a knife.
