More Animal Attacks
2009
I sat and watched about an hour or so of “animal attack” TV shows last night. This episode featured bears and the horrendous damage that they inflicted on the survivors who told the tales. My thoughts drifted during commercial breaks to other shows, where the attackers were Cougars, Wolves, Coyotes and wild dogs. In all cases the people were hurt badly and suffered many surgeries in most cases, not to mention the terrible emotional damage that they would live with for the rest of their lives.
Drifting further along my train of thought, I recalled that the one single item that stopped deadly attacks from Bears, Lions and even some crazed, hell-bent Chimpanzees, was Pepper Spray! Personally, I’m uneasy around wild animals and wouldn’t dream of going into Grizzly Bear country without a minimum of a .357 revolver and pepper spray. If I had to take them illegally, I would risk the chance of getting busted after seeing these apex predators in action.
I doubt that a canister of Bear Pepper Spray would be illegal but I don’t go into the wilds in their habitat. To go out and risk a gruesome death because one didn’t bother to take this simple precaution is inexcusable, in my opinion.
Animals have scent receptor nerves that are 1000’s of times more powerful than a human being, so what would be the most effective deterrent? We’ve seen what pepper spray will do to a human being and this would be greatly magnified by the increased sensitivity of a wild animals senses. I think it would be cheaper to drop a few bucks on some bear pepper spray or in areas where dogs roam loose, on some pepper spray for dogs by Mace.
Just some thoughts I wanted to share – happy trails!

A lot of people go camping and hiking in bear country with no idea of what they could be in for. There are some great websites that tell you what to look for and how to act and not act in the wilderness. Along with a little education on bear behavior, I would definitely have a cannister or two of a good bear spray.

Agreed! I actually read two different studies on the use of pepper spray in bear attacks. One showed a 94 % rate of deterrent and the other was about 86 % deterrent. They showed better survival rates than having a firearm. They also noted that some bears had to be sprayed, 2 or more bursts to stop them. These were actual Govt. studies based on actual encounters!
