When All Else Fails – Take Them Out!

That’s some pretty strong language isn’t it? It’s also a pretty tall order for most most men and women too! Let’s say you’re “average” Jane, or John. You are employed at a local company in your city, or commute to a neighboring locality. Hopefully most of you live within a reasonable drive to your apartment, condo, or home.

Maybe your company is headquartered in a towering building of glass and steel – located in the heart of one of our largest cities in the USA. You either commute alone or with friends, via auto, or transit system, from home to a parking garage, or exit stop adjoining your employer’s location.

Doing the 9 to 5 commute every day can, in time, expose you to many unexpected and unwelcome dangers. I’m certain that the percentage of workers who travel into or though our large cities, and carry a firearm for personal protection, would be less than 2% – and that’s a stretch. Even in States with CCW, “must issue”, concealed carry permits available for carrying handguns, people don’t avail themselves of this protection. With only a small fee, and the minor amount of paperwork involved, most people still don’t carry (or even own) a handgun.

So what can you do before that first, or next situation, where you feel, or actually are threatened, and your heart is racing with panic because you happened to be in the wrong place at the wrong time? Or perhaps, before you’re the mark of an experienced robber, sociopath, car jacker, purse snatcher, or rapist. I’m referring to guys (mostly), who wouldn’t lose a moments sleep after robbing, raping or even killing someone.

I would suggest as always, that if you have the time and a few dollars a weeks, spending it on a martial arts class for as long as you can. Go with a referral from a friend or just check out a couple dojos in the phone book. Watch the classes at each dojo if allowed, and choose one that looks like it fits your body type, and where you might be happy to train for a “period of time”. Don’t be afraid to speak with the instructor, bringing up your needs, and any questions you have before you sign up. If you feel good about it then try it out – but don’t get “nabbed” into signing long term contracts – by the class, or monthly dues are the most desirable ways to go. It’s money well spent for self defense peace of mind.

If you just can’t make the time for karate or kung fu classes, or just don’t care for that stuff, fine – Martial Arts are not for everyone! Barring firearms and martial arts skills, let’s look at self defense items. For the ladies – a personal alarm is a “must have” item. They come in a few types, using loud alarms (sound) and combine with strobes as well (light). Two things an attacker doesn’t want – noise and attention!

Now, round that out with a really effective pepper spray – I say check out Mace pepper gel, the new kid on the block with unbelievable range, pinpoint accuracy, no cross contamination of the Mace – meaning you can shoot someone with it in the same room, or even in a hospital for that matter, and not get any residual reactions from ambient particles – and it sticks like glue with a UV marking dye For a few extra bucks, it’s a “no-brainer” as far as I’m concerned – get some!!

Another good combo I like for guys, is some Mace gel, as mentioned above, for distance situations, then a quality stun gun, if things get real close up. These stun guns will jump through about 1 1/2 inches of clothing and still put a hurting on the shockee! You don’t have to worry if the attacker is touching you – the current won’t pass through and back to you!

One of these telescopic steel batons is a very nice, and potentially lethal deterrent. I would recommend this for almost anyone who’s fit enough to swing it with authority, and possesses a bit of dexterity. You must be very careful with one of these, since they can inflict a lot of damage to the body – of the permanent type. That goes for the owner as well, if you’re unlucky enough to lose it to your opponent, then look out!

So consider that, and practice for 15 – 20 minutes a night with it when possible, for a few weeks. Pick it up and swing it a bit whenever you walk past it. In no time you’ll feel very confident and able to use it for self defense purposes. Remember, it’s only an extension of your arm right?
